Tasting Notes

SKU: N/A Category:

For this Ironstone release we handpicked the 75-year-old War Horse vineyard, these old gnarly dry grown Grenache vines were planted in 1944 by Italian POW’s. Due to the two lateral layers of Ironstone, the vines are permanently stressed, thus producing small yields of around a tonne and a half per acre. The small berry, concentrated fruit offered from these vines in 2016 provided us the quality and character to release this wine under our iconic Ironstone label.
We matured 50% of the wine in new 600lt French oak puncheon’s and the other 50% matured in older French and American oak to maintain primary fruit.
This bright and vibrant wine exhibits a bouquet of red rose, spicy raspberry, pomegranate and red cherry, with hints of subtle nutty cedary oak. With the palate delivering raspberry puree, dried cranberry, red currant and nutmeg, intermingled with Christmas pudding and spices.
A quintessential McLaren Vale Grenache.
